Medical Affairs

Medical Affairs has grown within the pharmaceutical industry over the years to provide scientific and clinical support to commercial and medical teams amongst others and ensure that companies adhere to strict regulations including ABPI, IPHA, PAGB and EFPIA codes and MHRA guidelines within the UK and International markets. As a medical affairs professional, your duties may include KOL (Key Opinion Leader) development, creating and presenting educational materials, attending symposia, working with brand and marketing teams, providing copy approval for various materials etc.

Medical Information

Medical Information personnel provide the first port of call for product information for healthcare professionals (for example: doctors, pharmacists, nurses and NHS managers) and to patients. In MI, you would provide information relating to companies marketed products and are the initial interaction between the end client and those using or requesting information about their products. In higher MI roles, you would provide escalated enquiry handling duties and possibly copy approval for various company materials.

Healthcare Compliance

Healthcare compliance is the process of following rules, regulations, and laws that relate to healthcare practices. Compliance in healthcare can cover a wide variety of practices and observe internal and external rules and codes of practice and guidelines such as ABPI, IPHA, FDA, EFPIA, and MHRA. It can be defined as the ongoing process of meeting or exceeding the legal, ethical, and professional standards applicable to healthcare organisations or providers.

Healthcare compliance is an oversight role essential for companies to operate and execute policy smoothly and within the confines of the law.

Healthcare compliance professionals have strong links with many internal and external stakeholders and are often required to train teams internally to ensure standards are understood and adhered to. Those working in healthcare compliance would need to have a comprehensive understanding of the company related practices and guidelines which need to be adhered to and may be responsible for writing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and setting up of and maintaining a QMS (Quality Management System) to ensure compliance is adhered to and auditable.  You may also be required to conduct ongoing risk assessment of internal procedures.

Pharmacovigilance / Drug Safety

Pharmacovigilance / Drug Safety roles revolve around the collection of data from both clinical trial and post-marketed products to ensure future patient safety. Initially, data such as adverse events is collected and case processed.  This is held to aid with future efficacy and safety of products, usually working in close conjunction with regulatory departments.

More senior PV personnel will likely specialise in areas such as Risk Management, Signal Detection, PVQA, PV Compliance, PSUR writing and PV Agreements/SDEA duties.

Medical Communication

The Medical Communications (Med Comms) process is instrumental in shaping marketing and uses a strategic approach that will utilise a variety of channels to ensure consistent and clear support for the company and their products throughout the brand lifecycle. Those working in Med Comms can be responsible for Key Opinion Leader (KOL) identification and development, development of training programmes for internal and external use, raising therapy area awareness through scientific meetings including ad boards, symposia etc.

Clinical Research / Clinical Trials

Before a product can be marketed, it will go through various phases of Clinical Trials (Phases I to IV) to ensure safety and efficacy in the treatment for the end patient.  With each phase of trial, the number of participants increases until the product is deemed safe for the market and receives the appropriate authorisations to go to market.

Those working in clinical trials are responsible for studies from start-up to close-out and everything required in between.

Whilst some companies have their own clinical trial facilities, often clinical trials work is outsourced to a Clinical Research Organisation (CRO) who conduct the trials.

Depending on where in the clinical trial process you work, you could be responsible for study start-up activities, site selection and feasibility, monitoring and closing of studies.

Those working within Quality Assurance (QA) ensure that products meet the required standards and regulations through all stages of a product lifecycle, from clinical phase to manufacture and distribution/supply chain. These regulations include GCP (Good Clinical Practice); GLP (Good Laboratory Practice); GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice); GDP (Good Distribution Practice) and GxP (Good Practice covering various fields).

Regulatory Affairs

Regulatory Affairs is one of the broadest job areas within the pharma industry, with regulatory professionals working through a products entire lifecycle, from the research and development phases, through to clinical trials, marketed and post marketed product stages, ensuring that companies adhere to strict guidelines on a global scale to provide safe and effective products to consumers worldwide. Regulatory focusses in new, existing and emerging markets and regulatory professionals can specialise in a number of areas. Regulatory work can involve broad or specialist experience in areas such as clinical trial applications (CTAs), compliance, regulatory submissions, labelling and publishing.

Regulatory affairs is an essential function across all healthcare industries (OTC, pharma, biotech, devices etc)

Health Economics / Market Access

Market Access is the process that companies go through to ensure that their products are made available in as many countries as possible, while ensuring these medicines are reimbursed and made available to the patients who need them.

For example, in order to have their products reimbursed by the NHS, companies are required to gather and analyse available market data around the health economic impact and cost effectiveness of their products, while presenting this data to NICE through HTAs (Health Technology Assessments). NICE will ultimately decide if a product is cost effective enough for the market.

Those working in health economics and market access can be responsible for planning, designing and conducting UK and multi-national outcomes research studies, produce forecasting analysis for pipeline products; sourcing, interpretating, generating and dissemination of Health and Value (H&V) data ready for submissions, providing technical input into economic models as well as pricing and HTA readiness activities.

Sales / Marketing

Sales Professionals

Pharmaceutical Sales professionals are employed by a variety of industries to sell products to a variety of external stakeholders. Pharma Sales professionals are best placed to influence healthcare professionals and KOLs on the benefits of the company’s products.

Pharmaceutical sales require adherence to the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) code and if working in Sales, you would be required to have passed an ABPI exam either prior to starting or as part of your training. Pharma sales personnel need to be excellent communicators and highly organised as the role involves a lot of networking, presenting of information, attending conferences, appointment making and influencing.

Work may include creating sales materials and content to be used by other commercial partners for product promotion, potential markets analysis, competitor analysis and project management.  Just like sales, marketing professionals need to have outstanding communication and organisational skills as you will be collaborating with internal and external stakeholders as well as external agencies and authorities.
