Within the NHS Pharmacists fall into several generic job profiles, which also tend to be used by the Independent sector, HM Prisons, Armed Forces etc. The main job profiles are:
Band 5 - Pharmacist Entry Level (Pre Registration Pharmacist)
As part of a structured rotational training programme, undertakes dispensing and supply of medicines; technical & aseptic preparation of drugs; provosopn of mediicines advice; ward based pharmacy services. Attends study sessions towards registration.
Band 6 - Pharmacist
Provides pharmacy services (eg clinical pharmacy, production, medicines information/management) in hospital or primary care setting. Undertakes risk management and ensures compliance with Medicines Legislation. Supervises less experienced pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Advises junior members of medical staff & nurses on pharmacy matters. May provide emergency services out of hours.
Band 7 - Pharmacist Specialist
Provides specialist pharmacy services in hospital or primary care setting in eg production, critical care or oncology clinical pharmacy, medicines information or medicines management; undertakes risk management and ensures compliance with Medicines Legislation. Undertakes teaching and supervision of less experienced pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy students.
Band 8a/8b - Pharmacist Advanced
Responsible for leading and delivering specialist pharmacy services to a directorate or equivalent area eg critical care or paediatric clinical care pharmacy service. Ensures compliance with Medicines Legislation. Provides expert advice on pharmaceutical matters in specialist fields. Leads and develops clinical audit, undertakes research.
Band 8b/8c - Pharmacist Team Manager
Responsible for delivering, managing and developing a component of a pharmacy service or equivalent in a hospital or primary care setting. Provides expert advice on pharmaceutical matters in own specialist area, undertakes risk management and ensures compliance with Medicines Legislation. Leads and develops clinical audit, undertakes and co-ordinates research.
Band 8b to 8d - Pharmacy Consultant
Responsible for leading and delivering a highly specialist pharmacy service. Undertakes relevant risk management and ensures compliance with Medicines Legislation. Provides expert advice on pharmaceutical matters in their specialist field. Leads and develops clinical audit, co-ordinates and undertakes research, provides specialist training.
Band 8c to 9 - Professional Manager Pharmaceutical Services
Responsible for delivery of pharmacy services across the organisation, including financial & staff management. Provides expert advice on pharmaceutical matters to the organisation, senior managers, prescribers. Responsible for medicines management, pharmacy practice, risk management issues & other clinical governance matters. Leads and develops clinical audit undertakes and may co-ordinate research.
